03 Which tumor entities have been treated?
For more than 15 years, horses suffering from Equine Sarcoids are treated with dendritic cell vaccines. In most cases these patients had unsuccessfully undergone many different chirurgically and nonchirurgically treatment options.
Dr. Thomas Grammel started 10 years ago the cancer treatment of dogs and cats with dendritic cell vaccines. In the mean time, hundreds of dogs, cats and horses were treated with DC vaccines produced by Dr. Thomas Grammel and the team from PetBioCell. Therefore, we possess a lot of knowledge in the treatment of different tumor entities and tumor locations in the different species. Each patient is treated as an individual case and the owner and their home veterinarian are individually counselled. Every porduced vaccine is therefore a single-unit production in our specialized laboratory.
We produced dendritic cell vaccines for the treatment of squamous cell carcinomas, sarcomas (i.e.fibrosaromas), mast cell tumors and many other tumor entities.
Dogs
In treating different canine tumors and localizations, we found a lot of positive responses. Because of the numerous animals treated, we are able to present comparative numbers in comparison to established treatment options, for example for the treatment of histiocytosis (Bernese Mountain Dog), melanomas, carcinomas, sarcomas and mast cell tumors.
Please note: the best results in cancer treatment are seen, if the tumor burden is as small as possible – for example after a surgical intervention.
Horses
The first vaccines were produced for equine patients more than one and a half decade ago. Originally the treatment started in Equine Sarcoids, but is now extended to melanomas, carcinomas and sarcomas.
Equine Sarcoids
In 2009 a phd thesis in veterinary medicine by Sabine Bischoff at the Freie University Berlin investigated the use of dendritic cell vaccines in the therapy of Equine Sarcoids and showed the following results:
- No grave local or systemic side effects were seen under the treatment. The therapy is seen as a secure treatment.
- All patients got a chirurgical reduction of the tumor burden. The pre-vaccine treatment tried to remove as much tumor tissue as possible.
- Two tumor vaccines were adminstered within an interval of 4 weeks to get an increased immune answer. It is expected that the immunologic memory after frequent application of the vaccine leads to a fortified immune answer.
- 13 of 21 patients treated were free of recurrence after the end of treatment protocol and observation time, 8 patients developed recidives.
- No connection could be found between the number of sarcoids and the recurrence of the disease.
- The thesis showed better clinical results with the approach chirurgy/vaccination than a sole chirurgical intervention in the equine sarcoids.
- There was no correlation found between the clinical effectiveness of the dendritic cell treatment and the kind of pre-treatment, age of the horse or the number of Equine Sarcoids detected.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma - Horse
The equine patients treated with sqamous cell carcinoma had tumor locations around the eye lids, around the mouth, in the cirumanal and in the prebuce/penis area. We have seen a lot of promising positive healing results.
Melanoma - Horse
Some horses with melanoma were treated with positive effects. It seems to be very important to act early to get a good immunologic response in horses with melanoma.
Sarcoma - Horse
Our experience with equine sarcomas is similary to the anatomical location and clinical outcome of equine squamous cell carcinomas patients.
Cats
The most treated tumor type in cats is the feline fibrosarcoma. We have numerous very positive case reports after the immunologic approach. It is important to start the production and use of a tumor vaccine treatment very short after a comprehensive chirurgical intervention.
